Wood floors come in two basic types:

  • Solid wood flooring
  • Engineered wood flooring

Solid Wood is formed of 3/4 "thick solid wood, tongue and groove sides to join the board. Some manufacturers make a thinner version that is 5/16" thick. The main advantages of solid wood flooring are its ability to be re-sanded and refinished over the years.

The main issue to consider with solid wood flooring is its susceptibility to expansion and contraction due to changes in humidity in the home. To accommodate for the movement, the floor is normally fitted with a 5/8 "to 3/4" gap around the floor along the walls. This gap is covered by the shoe molding and baseboards.

However, thinner 5/16" wood flooring can be used in such applications. When installing a solid wood floor over a concrete new or existing, make sure the manufacturer's recommendations on the moisture in the concrete boundary followed.

Solid wood flooring is available in three main types:

  • Line symbolized is the floor with wooden planks thickness and width. The strip floor has a fixed width, but the thickness can change accordingly.
  • Plank flooring approaches mainly in two thicknesses, but in this type of flooring, the width will be varied according to the needs.
  • Parquet floors have a very different appearance from the normal hardwoods. They consist of geometric patterns composed of one type of wood pattern.
