Face mask

Face masks are disposable facial pieces that protect the user's mouth and nose from splashes and sprays.

They are also intended to prevent droplets from spreading through the wearer, for example when sneezing or coughing. However, face masks cannot avoid the very small particles in the air which, due to their very loose application, can contain viruses. They are also labeled as surgical, dental, isolation, laser, and medical procedures masks.

Respirator

Respiratory protection devices are designed to protect the user from inhaling very small particles. Compared to a face mask, a tighter breathing apparatus allows the user to inhale air primarily through its filter material, which traps particles.

Due to their ability to filter out small particles, respiratory protective devices are mainly used in construction and industries where dust is present. Respirators can also be used by medical personnel who have close contact with people with respiratory problems that can be transmitted through airborne particles. These respirators must be approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). To verify that the ventilator is NIOSH approved, the following information must be printed on the mask:

  • Manufacturer's name or registered trademark
  • Compatible part number (P / N), model number, or name
  • Filter protection type – filter range and NIOSH efficiency (e.g. N95 or R95)
  • NIOSH Exam Certificate and Approval Number
  • NIOSH logo or the acronym NIOSH in uppercase
